Pieces of Clay is a visual brand identity and illustration project created for a vintage clothing collector and reseller whose style is shaped by nostalgia, individuality, and self-expression. The brand draws directly from the founder’s last name, Clay, using playful, blob-like forms to symbolize versatility, creativity, and the beauty of shaping something by hand.

CLAY-LIKE FORMS

The visual identity is anchored by a custom brand pattern inspired by literal pieces of clay — organic, imperfect, and ever-shifting. These blob-like forms act as the foundation of the system, mirroring both the tactile nature of vintage fashion and the act of curating garments with intention.

VISUAL BRAND IDENTITY REFRESH

PIECES OF NOSTALGIA

The color palette - deep pink, olive, sunflower yellow, camouflage, newspaper white, and charcoal - was carefully selected to evoke warmth, contrast, and nostalgia, pulling from bold 80s/90s fashion moments while remaining modern and wearable.

Custom fashion illustrations bring the brand to life, drawing influence from 80s and 90s sitcom aesthetics and the expressive silhouettes of that era’s clothing. We intentionally incorporated hands throughout the illustrations as a visual throughline, symbolizing the founder’s role as a stylist, the hands-on nature of curation, and the handmade quality of both fashion and identity.

PLAYFUL PIECES

To extend the brand beyond the screen, we designed a custom “P” keychain made up of abstract puzzle-like pieces, a tactile nod to the idea of Pieces of Clay being shaped, collected, and pieced together over time. This small but intentional detail reinforces the brand’s handmade nature, sense of discovery, and joy in curation, turning the identity into something collectible, personal, and meant to be carried daily.

INTENTIONAL STORYTELLING

Social Media Digital Assets

The social media system was designed to feel just as bold and flexible as the clothing itself. Modular templates were created to highlight sales, new arrivals, fashion inspiration, and lookbooks, allowing the brand to shift effortlessly between promotion and storytelling. The blob patterns, bold expressive typography, and illustrations provide consistency, while varied layouts keep the content dynamic and scroll-stopping.

Each template functions as a frame for the clothing, never overpowering it, but enhancing the personality of each piece. The system encourages creativity and spontaneity, making it easy for the brand to mix eras, textures, and moods while staying visually cohesive across platforms.

PIECES OF APPRECIATION

The thank you cards feature hand-drawn illustrations, thoughtfully pieced together to bring the full Pieces of Clay identity to life, embodying the layered storytelling as a personal appreciation.
